carBIOrante, a student company from the French School of Santo Domingo in Dominican Republic, won the MetLife LifeChanger Award at the JA Europe Company of the Year Competition 2019. The award, sponsored by MetLife Foundation, recognises student companies that best embrace the concepts of social impact, financial performance and innovation in their business strategy while maintaining a realistic plan in today’s marketplace.

Nine students of the French School of Santo Domingo demonstrated to the jury the product’s capacity to have a great social impact by transforming cooking oil into biofuel, and offering to the population a more affordable cleaner alternative to diesel.

We believe so much in the potential of our idea and are delighted MetLife has also seen the environmental, economic and societal possibilities of our project!” said Maria Alejandra from carBIOrante.

The jury for the 2019 JA Europe Company of the Year Competition, composed of representatives of MetLife France, selected the Dominican Republic team for their ability to demonstrate their company’s sustainability, innovation and high financial performance.

The judges found that CarBiorante demonstrated a high-level of maturity and a resolute will to make an impact on the environment and the population. Their business model was strong and they handled challenges like true entrepreneurs, showing the capability to be future leaders.

“It is an honour to recognise carBIOrante with the MetLife LifeChanger Award,” said Dirk Ostijn, Head of EMEA, MetLife. “Their enterprise exemplifies the award criteria and also shows the benefits of building young people’s financial and entrepreneurial capabilities. Their future and the future of our global communities are indeed bright.”

This year marks the fourth time the MetLife LifeChanger Award has been presented at the JA Europe Company of the Year Competition.

Since 2014, MetLife Foundation and MetLife offices in countries across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), including 15 countries in Europe, have partnered with JA. Through the partnership, MetLife volunteers empower young people to become financially healthy by building work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial capability. MetLife is actively involved in JA Europe’s Progression Model by participating at all levels of education from primary to tertiary schools. In the last academic year, MetLife volunteers delivered the JA curricula to more than 26,000 students across Europe, through its MetLife LifeChanger initiative.

MetLife France has been collaborating with Entreprendre pour Apprendre, a member of the JA Europe network, over the last five years. Each year, several MetLife employees coach the young entrepreneurs and help them to turn ideas into profitable businesses.

We believe JA programs are life-changing for young people. The involvement of MetLife and the MetLife Foundation is key to empowering the next generation of changemakers, innovators and business leaders. We are delighted to see those skills and competences so well embodied by this year’s winners of the MetLife LifeChanger Award – congratulations carBIOrante!” said Caroline Jenner, CEO of JA Europe.
