SAVeat wins AT&T Excellence in IT Award

What if the tens of millions of tonnes of food wasted every day across Europe could be used by consumers and social enterprises working to tackle waste and hunger across the continent?

The first small steps are already being taken by SAVeat, the Greek student enterprise company which won the AT&T Excellence in IT Award at the 2019 JA Europe Company of the Year Competition.

SAVeat’s geo location enabled platform links surplus supermarket stock to consumers in need via a web-based control panel. Competing against another 40 teams from across Europe, the AT&T jury recognised the students for demonstrating the best innovation-driven concept, with strong business potential and sustainability, as well as viability and scalability.

Our winner is harnessing the power of technology to develop a business that matches surplus food to consumers,” said Peter Daly, Vice President, Customer Advocacy, AT&T. “They are already positively impacting their local communities with a live platform driven service. It’s up and working well in Greece with many leading supermarkets and food vendors on board. In the opinion of the jury the SAVeat solution demonstrated viability and further potential to scale and benefit the communities the company hopes to serve.”

Every year, more than 200 young people from across Europe gather for the finale of the JA Europe Company of the Year event, competing for prestigious prizes such as the “AT&T Excellence in IT” award. Over the course of this year, more than 345.000 students took part in the JA Company Programme, a year-long programme where students develop a product or a service, create their own company and manage their business from start to finish. The students went through a national competition and were selected to represent their country at the European finale.

Technology is the future! As we started our project, we firmly believed that there is no better use for such powerful tools than solving problems affecting all of us. The AT&T Excellence IT Award is an acknowledgement that we are doing something good” said Stylianos Boulitsakis from SAVeat.

This year marks the 4th edition of the AT&T Signature Excellence in IT award. It is part of the broader collaboration between AT&T and JA Europe: the two organisations are working together to equip young people in 8 countries with the skills they need to get a job or start a business. As part of AT&T Aspire, the company’s signature philanthropic initiative, AT&T is supporting entrepreneurship and employability programmes which focus on building competences that help participants move into the workforce with a clear competitive advantage. AT&T-supported activities include employability programmes that introduce students to the world-of-work through IT workshops, soft-skills development, and entrepreneurial programmes that give participants a 360-degree view on how to build a company.

During the academic year 2018-2019, more than 5,500 students participated in various employability and entrepreneurship programmes such as Soft Skills workshops, management training, Innovation Challenges and Camps and Hackathon events. These events were made possible thanks to the support of almost 500 AT&T volunteers in 8 European countries (Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Israel, the Netherlands, Slovakia and the UK).

We are delighted to have AT&T with us in Lille to celebrate this important milestone. Our organization was founded 100 years ago by the chairman of AT&T and a few of his peers. Thanks to the commitment of businesses such as AT&T, JA has impacted millions of young people and looks forward to continuing our partnership in so many countries,” said Caroline Jenner, CEO of JA Europe.
